Abstract

This study aims to determine the interpersonal communication patterns used by Communication Studies students from the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) intake of 2021 in establishing healthy relationships with their partners.
This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Subjects were selected using a purposive sampling technique, with the criteria being students who were currently in or had previously been in healthy romantic relationships. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.
The results showed that students employed interpersonal communication patterns of openness, empathy, support, positivity, and equality. Informants tended to prioritize face-to-face communication to avoid misunderstandings, maintain clarity of messages, and express emotions more naturally. Furthermore, students viewed communication as the primary foundation for maintaining trust, resolving conflicts, and aligning relationship goals. Overall, interpersonal communication patterns have been shown to play a crucial role in establishing and maintaining healthy relationships.
