Abstract
This study aims to determine the communication patterns of parents with middle children in Malang City using the Family Communication Patterns theory that focuses on conversation orientation and conformity orientation. The background of this study is that middle children often experience middle child syndrome, which is a feeling of not getting enough attention, feeling ignored and not considered in the family. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive type and a case study basis. The subjects of this study were four parents of middle children in Malang City. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation. The results show that family communication patterns are divided into three main family types. First, the consensual family type was found in two subject families characterized by high conversation orientation and high conformity orientation. This pattern still emphasizes obedience but still creates a discussion space for children to express their opinions. Second, the pluralistic family type was found in one subject family characterized by high conversation orientation and low conformity orientation. This pattern prioritizes communication within the family so that all family decisions are made through discussions with all family members. Third, the protective family type was found in one subject family characterized by low conversation orientation and high conformity orientation. This pattern emphasizes values and obedience in the family where parents take full control of decision-making and children have no room to express their opinions.
