Abstract
The song Di Udara by Efek Rumah Kaca is a musical work created as a form of tribute and remembrance of Munir, an Indonesian human rights activist known for his courage in upholding justice and defending human rights. This song is rich in symbols, metaphors, and moral messages that remain relevant to the contemporary human rights struggle in Indonesia. The research problem addressed in this study is: How do members of IMM Renaissance FISIP UMM interpret the lyrics of the song Di Udara by Efek Rumah Kaca. The purpose of this study is to examine the interpretations of IMM Renaissance FISIP UMM regarding the lyrics of Di Udara by Efek Rumah Kaca.
This research employs two theoretical frameworks. The first is Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory (Encoding–Decoding), which categorizes audience interpretations into three positions: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. The second theory is Melvin DeFleur’s Mass Communication Theory, which explains the process of message delivery from communicators to audiences through mass media, emphasizing effects, influences, and audience responses to the conveyed messages.
This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the research subjects, namely the chairperson and members of the social and community affairs division for the 2024/2025 period of IMM FISIP UMM who are familiar with the song Di Udara and understand the background of Munir’s struggle.
The results show that the interpretations of IMM Renaissance FISIP UMM toward the lyrics of Di Udara are divided into three reading positions based on Stuart Hall’s reception theory. The majority of informants occupy the dominant position, meaning they understand and accept the song’s message in accordance with the songwriter’s intent, namely as a tribute to Munir’s struggle and a critique of human rights violations. Some informants fall into the negotiated position, where they accept the main message of the song but reinterpret it based on personal perspectives, particularly regarding the effectiveness of message delivery and audience reach. Meanwhile, others adopt an oppositional position, expressing critical views of the song, considering it less effective in reaching a broader audience and overly symbolic, which may lead to misinterpretation by general listeners.
