Abstract

This study aims to uncover the meaning of patriarchal culture in the film Before, Now & Then by Kamila Andini and examine how women are represented within the power dynamics between men and women, using a qualitative approach and a constructivist paradigm. The semiotic analysis method of Charles Sanders Peirce, which emphasizes three elements icon, index, and symbol is applied to analyze this film. The results show that patriarchal culture is depicted through the dominance of men in decision-making and control over women's lives, while the main character, Nana, becomes a representation of a woman striving to maintain her dignity and identity in the midst of an oppressive system. Cinematographic elements such as dim lighting, domestic space, and traditional clothing serve as symbols of the enforcement of patriarchal control over women, while the relationship between Nana and her husband's first wife reflects solidarity and a subtle form of resistance against patriarchal dominance. Overall, the film underscores that cinema can serve as a medium of cultural communication that not only represents the social conditions of the past but also critiques the patriarchy ideology that still persists in Indonesian society.
