Abstract

Adolescence is an important phase in the search for and formation of self-identity. In this context, their involvement in subculture communities becomes a means of formulating social and cultural identity. This study aims to determine how adolescents who are members of the hardcore punk community in Malang express their identity through music, clothing style, and the use of social media. The theoretical framework used includes Tajfel and Turner's (1979) social identity theory, supplemented by Michael Hecht's identity communication theory to examine the process of identity formation in group dynamics. This study was conducted qualitatively using a case study method, involving five adolescents aged between 18 and 24 who are active in the hardcore punk community in Malang. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman analysis model. Findings indicate that music functions not only as a means of personal expression but also as a tool for shaping collective consciousness. Clothing style becomes a visual marker and a symbol of resistance, while social media is used to establish relationships, disseminate community values, and assert the existence of identity in the digital space. The identity that is formed is flexible and continues to evolve through social interactions that are rich in ideological meaning.
