Abstract
Interpersonal communication within the family plays a crucial role in shaping children’s self-confidence, particularly through interactions between fathers and children. Fathers, as figures of authority as well as companions in psychosocial development, provide unique contributions to this process. However, existing phenomena indicate that the quality and intensity of such communication are often not optimal. This study aims to analyze the relationship and the magnitude of the influence of father–child interpersonal communication on students’ self-confidence.
This research employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The research population consisted of students from four public senior high schools in Malang City (SMAN 10, SMAN 3, SMAN 9, and SMAN 1), with a sample of 375 respondents selected using probability sampling through a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using an interpersonal communication questionnaire and a self-confidence scale. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis with the assistance of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
The results indicate a significant positive relationship between father–child interpersonal communication and children’s self-confidence. The better the quality and intensity of communication established, the higher the level of students’ self-confidence. Furthermore, the findings reveal that father child interpersonal communication has a significant influence on the enhancement of children’s self-confidence. These findings emphasize that the father’s role through effective communication is a vital contribution to children’s psychosocial development. This study is expected to serve as a reference for parents and schools in optimizing family communication patterns to support children’s self-confidence.
