Abstract
This study aims to analyze the level of copyright awareness among Communication Science students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, encompassing the understanding of fundamental copyright concepts, awareness levels in utilizing intellectual works, and comprehension of moral rights, economic rights, and related rights. The research is prompted by the persistent practice of using works without proper attribution and the low level of understanding regarding the limitations of utilizing others' intellectual property. This study is grounded in Wilbur Schramm’s Level of Awareness Theory, which categorizes awareness into three stages: awareness, comprehension, and action. This theoretical framework is employed to assess the stages of student awareness within the context of copyright.
The research utilizes a descriptive quantitative approach with a total sampling technique involving 208 Communication Science students. Data were collected through a four-point Likert scale questionnaire and analyzed using mean score analysis. The results indicate that the students' overall awareness level falls within the "high" category, with an overall mean of 2.84. Specifically, the General Understanding of Copyright indicator achieved a mean of 3.30 (very high), and the Level of Awareness indicator reached a mean of 2.93 (high). Conversely, the indicators for Moral, Economic, and Related Rights fell into the "low" category with a mean of 2.46. These findings suggest that while students possess a strong conceptual understanding, they have not fully implemented copyright values in practice. Based on the Level of Awareness Theory, most students remain at the comprehension stage and have yet to progress to the action stage. Consequently, strengthening copyright education through the integration of Intellectual Property Rights into the curriculum and academic activities is essential. This research is expected to serve as a foundation for developing copyright literacy programs to foster a more ethical academic culture that respects intellectual works.
