Abstract

Bara Aji Saputra. Student ID Number: 202210040311157. Public Understanding of Male Makeup Tutorial Content on the TikTok Account @Ryanfadh (A Reception Study among Students at Muhammadiyah University Malang). 2025 Edition. Thesis.

The shift in masculinity values in the modern era has also influenced how men pay attention to their appearance, one of which is the use of makeup by men. In the era of new communication media, content such as men's makeup tutorials has begun to emerge, such as on the TikTok account @Ryanfadh. However, pros and cons have also emerged along with differences in understanding and acceptance of masculinity values by society.

This study focuses on students at Muhammadiyah University Malang who use makeup, both men and women, for assignments and to look attractive as campus ambassadors. This study uses Stuart Hall's reception theory, which views the audience as active participants in interpreting messages. This is based on different backgrounds and understandings, resulting in different interpretations of messages among individuals. This theory divides audience meaning into three categories: hegemonic dominant, negotiation, and opposition.

Through in-depth interviews and documentation, this study found that the subjects viewed male makeup openly as a form of self-respect, educational and informative content, and relevance.
