Abstract

This final project report examines the self-representation of transgender women in the documentary photobook Jantina through a visual narrative approach and production ethics focused on empathy. This work highlights the process of identity formation, social relations, and experiences of marginalization and stigma, with the main subject being "Regi."
As the axis of the story. As a photographer and photobook designer, the author managed all stages of production: pre-production (a study of documentary photography theory, the EDFAT method, namely Entire, Detail, Frame, Angle, Time, and visual strategies and narratives), production (semi-structured interviews to build trust, field photography), and post-production (curating ±500 photos into 75 photos, sequencing and layout in stages in three stages, physical design and printing process). The launching activity was carried out in a mini exhibition format accompanied by a public discussion to broaden the meaning of the work.
The analysis of the findings using Social Penetration Theory explores the dynamics of self-disclosure from general information to the personal level, demonstrating the link between family experiences, the absence of a father figure, vulnerable work choices, and the need for social acceptance. The study's findings confirm that documentary photography can be a reflective medium, not just documentation, connecting social reality, the ethics of representation, and empathetic communication. The report concludes with an emphasis on the importance of creative collaboration (subject creator curator), orderly production management, and recommendations for parents, researchers, and the community to build safe spaces and a more humane understanding.
