Abstract

Instagram has become one of the most widely used social media platforms for disseminating information and shaping public opinion on global issues, including the Israel–Palestine conflict. This study aims to identify the categories of message themes that appear in posts on the Instagram account @Bangonim related to the Israel–Palestine conflict, describe the emergence of each theme, and explain the dominant tendencies of those themes during the period of analysis.

This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis as the method. The unit of analysis consists of 65 posts on the @Bangonim Instagram account uploaded between 7 October and 6 November 2023 that are substantively related to the Israel–Palestine conflict. The data were collected through documentation of the posts and then coded into four main message themes—humanitarian, solidarity, political, and religious—based on indicators formulated in the coding guidelines. The coded data were then interpreted to explore how these themes are constructed and how they frame the conflict in the eyes of the audience.

The findings show that the humanitarian theme is the most prominent theme in the posts, followed by the solidarity theme, while political and religious themes appear less frequently. The dominance of humanitarian content reflects the focus of @Bangonim on building public empathy, portraying the suffering of victims, and encouraging concern for the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Meanwhile, the themes of solidarity, politics, and religion function as supporting frames that strengthen messages of support, moral positioning, and alignment with the Palestinian cause.
