Abstract

This study examines how SCDC Batch 2 students interpret and respond to the Codeblu case presented in the YouTube video “How Dangerous Is Food Vlogger Codeblu in Destroying a Business?”. Codeblu (William Anderson) became controversial after uploading a negative review of a cake shop accused of distributing moldy cakes to an orphanage. The issue was later discussed by the YouTube channel Catanomika through content addressing the same topic.

This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving five SCDC Batch 2 members selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Stuart Hall’s reception theory to identify dominant, negotiated, and oppositional audience readings.

The findings indicate that most subjects adopt a dominant-hegemonic position, acknowledging the strong influence of social media and food reviewers on culinary business reputations. Ethics, reviewer competence, and digital literacy are considered important, while negotiated and oppositional positions emerge in limited cases, mainly related to freedom of expression and differing views on the impact of viral opinions.
