Abstract
Sibling rivalry does not only occur in childhood, but can also continue into early adulthood and affect the quality of interpersonal relationships between siblings. This study aims to analyze patterns of interpersonal communication, particularly verbal and nonverbal messages, in the phenomenon of sibling rivalry in early adulthood. The focus of the study is on how miscommunication occurs and how language and self-expression affect the dynamics of sibling relationships. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews with three pairs of siblings in early adulthood who were identified as experiencing rivalry. Data analysis was performed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques.
Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that interpersonal communication in the phenomenon of sibling rivalry in early adulthood has a diverse pattern of interpersonal communication. All three pairs showed miscommunication dominated by semantic interference, namely differences in the meaning of messages between the sender and the receiver. This condition caused the verbal messages conveyed to not be received according to their original intent, thus triggering repeated conflicts. In addition, the function of verbal language does not work optimally in every sibling combination, whether male and male, female and female, or male and female, with different functional problems in each pair. Viewed through Social Penetration Theory, sibling relationships tend to experience depenetration, which is characterized by limited self-expression and the emergence of silent treatment behavior.
