Abstract

The short fictional film “Jika Hari Ini Aku Tidak Datang” is a drama that addresses issues of mental health and social pressure experienced by young people, particularly university students in the final stage of their studies. This work focuses on the role of the Director of Photography (DOP) in translating the screenplay into visual forms that effectively convey emotional and narrative messages. The DOP is responsible for designing the visual concept through image composition, lighting, camera movement, and color tone selection to support the atmosphere of the story.

The creative process of this work employs three stages of production: pre-production (the development of shot lists, floor plans, and photo boards), production (image capturing using appropriate framing techniques, camera movement, and lighting aligned with the mood of the story), and post-production (color grading and visual tone harmonization).

The results indicate that well-planned cinematography can significantly enhance the delivery of the film’s message regarding life pressures and the importance of mental health awareness. Through the role of the DOP, visual storytelling becomes a powerful means of communication that strengthens not only aesthetic value but also emotional impact. This work is expected to serve as an academic reference for students and film practitioners in understanding the importance of the DOP’s role in building narrative strength through visual language.
