Abstract
Background: Malassezia furfur is a normal flora in the human body. Malassezia can present
many clinical features including pityriasis versicolor and seborrheic dermatitis. Mango skin
contains phytochemicals that function as antifungals such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids,
saponins, triterpenoids and steroids.
Objective: Testing the effectiveness of mango fruit peel (Mangifera indica L.) extraction on
Malassezia furfur growth.
Methods: This study uses the True experiment design method with Post-test only control group
design. Using Malassezia Furfur fungus samples and agar and liquid dilution methods with 10
concentrations of mango fruit peel 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.5%, 0.78%,
0.39% 0% Data analysis using kruskal wallis and post-hoc (mann-whitney) tests.
Results: The results showed that the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of mango fruit peel
extract (Mangifera indica L.) against Malassezia furfur fungus could not be identified because
the extract was too cloudy, while the Minimum Fungicidal Concentration obtained the result
that the higher the concentration the more inhibited the growth of the fungus. Kruskal wallis
test results showed (p=0.002) these results indicate that the substances contained in mango fruit
peel extract (Manggifera Indica L.) have an influence on the growth of Malassezia furfur fungi.
Post hoc test shows the results (0.05) the results above show that between one concentration
with another concentration does not have a big influence on the growth of fungi and is less
effective in inhibiting the growth of Malassezia Furfur fungi.
Conclusion: Mango fruit peel extract (Manggifera Indica L.) is less effective in inhibiting the
growth of Malassezia Furfur fungus.
