Abstract

Background: Continuous family support can improve treatment adherence, enhance quality of life, and help patients achieve better overall health. Elderly patients undergoing lifelong treatment and lifestyle changes require consistent attention, encouragement, and family support to prevent psychological burdens. Purpose: To identify and describe the experiences of older adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in receiving family support when dealing with anxiety during self-care. Methods: This study used a qualitative research design with a case study approach involving two subjects, Mrs. S and Ms.L, Data validation was carried out through source triangulation using face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Data collection techniques included interviews, observation, and documentation. Results: Analysis of the validated interview data produced five themes: (1) physical condition changes in older adults after developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, (2) feelings and anxiety experienced by older adults with the disease, (3) strategies used by older adults to manage anxiety related to their condition, (4) forms of family support in care, and (5) the meaning of family support for older adults. Conclusion: Family support plays a vital role in the lives of older adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. As seen in the experience of Mrs. S, the presence, attention, and emotional support from family members not only provide comfort but also help reduce anxiety associated with the chronic nature of the illness. Higher levels of family support are linked to lower anxiety, which further encourages healthy behaviors and contributes to maintaining a better quality of life.
