Abstract
Background: Propionibacterium acnes is the normal flora present on human skin. Propionibacterium acnes can cause various health problems, one of which is acne vulgaris. Butterfly pea contain phytochemicals such as alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and saponins that function as antibacterials.
Objective: To determine the effect of 70% ethanol extract of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L) on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes.
Methods: This study uses the True experiment design method with Post-test only group design. Using Propionibacterium acnes bacteria samples using dilution methods with 11 concentrations of 70% etanol butterfly pea 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, 10% and 0%. Data analysis using One Way Anova and Post Hoc Bonferroni tests.
Results: The result of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 70% ethanol extract of butterfly pea against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes assessed by qualitative method is 10%. While the results of the Minimum Bactericidal Concetration of 70% ethanol extract of butterfly pea against the growth of Propionibacterium acnes assessed quantitatively were at a concentration of 30%. In the results of the One Way Anova test, the significance value of 0.000 is less than from 0.05, then there is a significant difference. Which then for the results of the Bonferroni Post Hoc test obtained a value of 0.000 which means significant. It can be concluded that the administration of ethanol extract of 70% butterfly pea has the effect of reducing the colony of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria.
Conclusion: 70% ethanol extract of butterfly pea has an effect in inhibiting the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria
