Abstract

Online games are the most popular entertainment and are in demand by young people, especially college students. On the other hand, even though they are popular and fun, online games are not free from various negative impacts and consequences, one of which is game addiction. Continuous involvement in games can make individuals lose self-control over games. Game addiction can be caused by various factors. One of them is low social skills. Social skills are one aspect of adaptive skills that is very important for everyone to have. This research aims to determine the effect of social skills training in reducing online game addiction in students. The subjects of this research were 10 students aged 19 - 20 years who met the inclusion criteria and were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The measuring tools for this research are the Social Skills Inventory (SSI) to measure social skills and the Game Addiction Scale (GAS) to measure game addiction. Data analysis was carried out using non-parametric tests such as the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The research results show that the p-value = 0.009 < 0.05. This means that this research hypothesis is accepted. Thus, providing treatment in the form of social skills training can reduce symptoms of online game addiction in the experimental group. On the other hand, in the control group, there were no significant changes because they were not given treatment.
