Abstract

This final project report examines the role of the Director of Photography (DoP) in the cinematographic production of the short fiction film Durasi, which follows a young migrant who returns home and becomes aware of her mother’s physical and emotional aging. The creative focus of this work is to demonstrate that the DoP is responsible not only for the technical aspects of cinematography but also for conveying narrative and emotional meaning. Cinematography functions as a visual communication tool that enriches the story’s significance, with processes that span from pre-production through post-production. The DoP collaborates closely with the director to design a visual concept aligned with the film’s narrative goals and to execute the technical implementation that creates a deep, emotionally engaging viewing experience. This report aims to contribute to the development of communication studies and to serve as a practical guide for filmmakers and students. Additionally, the work seeks to communicate the importance of valuing time spent together and the responsibility toward one’s parents. The short film Durasi invites audiences to reflect on values such as prayer, attentiveness, the meaning of returning home, and the irreplaceable nature of time.
