Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a rich diversity of cultures, particularly in the arts found in every region. One of these is the Beskalan Dance, which is one of the traditional dances that has become a cultural hallmark of the city of Malang. The Beskalan Dance is an iconic dance of Malang that is frequently performed to welcome guests visiting the city. However, not many people understand the deeper meaning of this dance, especially among dancers and the local Malang community themselves. Therefore, this study aims to identify and interpret the meanings of the movements contained in the Beskalan Dance.
This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type and an ethnographic research design. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and documentation, involving 13 (thirteen) subjects. All data were analyzed using Spradley’s model of analysis and were validated through data triangulation.
The results of the study on the Analysis of Nonverbal Messages in the Beskalan Dance at the UKM Sanggar Tari Karawitan Asri Kusuma, State University of Malang, indicate that there are 15 types of dance movements, consisting of 10 movement variations that carry nonverbal meanings and 5 movement variations that function as aesthetic elements of the dance. From these 10 meaningful movements, the study concludes that the Beskalan Dance represents the pattern of human life, in which God creates all human beings with the same life cycle, from birth, growth, and development, until eventually returning to the Almighty.
