Abstract
The phenomenon of shamanism in Banyuwangi is closely related to magical culture. In practice, shamanic activities employ non-verbal communication symbols that carry specific meanings and significance. Non-verbal symbols such as gestures and object symbols, including lintrik, are a primary focus within the local Banyuwangi context. This study aims to understand the meanings of non-verbal communication symbols used in the shamanic profession in Banyuwangi. Using an interpretive paradigm with a qualitative approach through a case study, data were collected from shamanic practitioners and community members who use their services in Kemiren Village. The results show that non-verbal symbols serve as the main medium for conveying messages, intentions, and spiritual energy. For shamans, actions such as closing their eyes while reciting spells function as an effort to enter the spiritual dimension and focus energy, while gently moving the lips is a way to control energy and protect the secrecy of the mantra. Object symbols such as lintrik cards are used as a medium of supernatural communication for divination, and elements such as incense, flowers, salt, and water symbolize purification, protection, and energy balance. On the other hand, symbols such as sharp objects (razors, nails, needles) and animals (chickens, eggs) in santet practices are interpreted by clients as evidence of power, seriousness, and ritual effectiveness that can transfer suffering or negative energy. Overall, the meanings of these non-verbal symbols are crucial in building trust, creating a mystical atmosphere, and fundamentally connecting the human world with spiritual forces within Banyuwangi cultural society.
