Abstract
Film plays an important role in representing social reality, including depicting the dynamics of early marriage and the various conflicts that accompany it. This study aims to analyze how young married couples receive and interpret family conflicts portrayed in the film Dua Hati Biru. Using a qualitative method and a reception analysis approach, the study explores the meanings constructed by six young married couples with diverse social backgrounds and marital experiences. The findings show that audience reception of the conflicts presented in the film varies based on the participants’ personal marital experiences. Most respondents perceive the film as realistic and relevant to their lives, particularly in terms of economic conflicts, communication issues, and the influence of extended family within the household. Some couples stated that the film provides new insights into the importance of communication and cooperation in resolving marital conflicts, while others felt that the film does not sufficiently present concrete solutions to the issues raised. This study refers to Stuart Hall’s reception theory, which identifies three positions of audience reception: dominant-hegemonic reading, negotiated reading, and oppositional reading. The majority of respondents in this study fall into the negotiated reading position, in which they accept most of the messages conveyed by the film while adapting them to their personal experiences and values.
