Abstract

Short fiction films are a form of visual expression capable of conveying moral messages and raising audience awareness through a combination of images and sound. This final project takes the form of a film entitled Relapse, which addresses the issue of the importance of communication within the family and its impact on a child’s psychological condition. The story is inspired by the research findings of Dr. Ajmal Zemmar on brain wave activity prior to death, which indicate the possibility that an individual may experience memory flashbacks in the final moments of life. This concept is translated into the film’s narrative as a journey through the main character’s memories, serving as an emotional reflection before his death.

The creative process was carried out in three stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. The pre-production stage involved story development, scriptwriting, character development, and the determination of the visual concept. The production stage included the filming process led directly by the director, along with intensive coordination with the entire crew to ensure consistency between the creative vision and the visual outcome. Meanwhile, post-production covered picture editing, sound design, the addition of visual effects, and color grading until the film was ready for distribution. Throughout all stages, the director played a key role as the artistic and narrative guide of the film.

Through this work, it is demonstrated that the director’s role is a primary factor in maintaining conceptual coherence and storytelling quality. Relapse is expected to provide audiences with a deeper understanding of the significance of family presence in a child’s emotional development, while also serving as a reference for students and beginner filmmakers in understanding the practice of directing short fiction films.
