Abstract

In the rapidly changing business world, adaptation through innovation was crucial for organizations seeking competitiveness and sustainability. At the individual level, innovation activity manifested as innovative work behavior. Innovative work behavior could be stimulated even when employees experienced mental workload, provided that the mental workload was perceived as a challenging stressor. The Job Demand-Resources model was employed to explain the conceptual model of the study on the influence of mental workload and the role of organizational innovation climate on innovative work behavior. The research aimed to understand the moderating role of the organizational innovation climate in the influence of mental workload on innovative work behavior. A quantitative method was used as the research approach. An online questionnaire was distributed to the research subject. Data were collected from 124 mid-level employees using purposive sampling. The scales for innovative work behavior, NASA-TLX for mental workload, and the organizational innovation climate were utilized as research instruments. Hypotheses were tested using the macroPROCESS moderation analysis technique. The research found that mental workload had a positive and significant impact on innovative work behavior. Additionally, evidence was obtained that the organizational innovation climate played a role in enhancing the positive impact of mental workload on innovative work behavior. This study contributed to the JD-R model. The implication is that by creating a supportive organizational innovation climate, organizations can provide more opportunities for employees to overcome challenges of mental workload and enhance innovative work behavior.
