Abstract
This study aims to describe family communication patterns in guiding daughters to pursue higher education in remote villages of Bondowoso Regency, with a focus on conformity orientation and conversation orientation within the Family Communication Patterns (FCP) theory. The background of this research is based on the social reality that girls in rural areas often face barriers to higher education due to economic limitations, social norms, and the dominance of parental decision-making. This research employed a qualitative method using a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four main subjects, namely parents of daughters living in remote villages in Bondowoso Regency, and were supported by observation and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, which were then linked to the FCP theory.
The results indicate that family communication patterns are divided into two main types. First, the Protective pattern was found in the families of two subjects, characterized by high conformity orientation and low conversation orientation. This pattern emphasizes children’s obedience to parents, provides minimal space for discussion, and views educational decisions as the sole authority of parents. Second, the Consensual pattern was observed in the families of the other two subjects, characterized by high conformity orientation and moderate to high conversation orientation. This pattern continues to emphasize obedience while allowing children to express their aspirations before parents make final decisions.
In conclusion, family communication patterns in remote villages of Bondowoso Regency show a strong tendency toward conformity orientation, where children’s obedience is considered a primary value. However, variations exist in the level of conversational openness: some families limit dialogue (Protective), while others attempt to balance obedience with openness (Consensual). These findings emphasize that girls’ access to higher education in rural areas is influenced not only by economic factors but also by communication dynamics within the family.
