Abstract

This study aims to examine the communication strategies used by non-students with special needs (non-ABK) when interacting with students with special needs (ABK) in an inclusive school setting. The research was conducted at SMKN 2 Malang using a qualitative descriptive research method with a case-based approach focused on a specific school. Data were collected through interviews and observations involving non-ABK students from the Hospitality Department who interacted with ABK students with cognitive impairments. These students had been in the same class for nearly three years. This study employs the concept of symbolic interactionism proposed by George Herbert Mead.

The findings indicate that non-ABK students apply various communication strategies, such as adjusting their speaking style, simplifying sentences, managing emotions, and using topics and communication media that align with the needs of ABK students. These strategies contribute to the creation of positive interactions and mutual understanding. Although challenges remain in terms of ABK students’ comprehension of certain vocabulary, coordination between the school and parents can serve as a solution for further monitoring and control. This study is expected to contribute to the development of communication strategies in inclusive educational environments in order to foster more equitable communication and respect for diversity.
