Abstract
Background: Dry eye disease has a high prevalence worldwide and increases in old age. DED is a multifactorial disease that can be influenced by many contributing factors. Aging can be a factor in DED because there are several structural and functional changes in the eye. Its occurrence can be different in men and women, one of which is due to androgen hormones, estrogen and progesterone.
Objective: to determine the relationship between gender and age with the incidence of DED in patients of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang General Hospital.
Method: analytic observational with cross sectional approach. This study used secondary data obtained from medical records of UMM University Hospital patients. Subjects were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. then from the data can be known diagnosis of the patient. The number of subjects obtained was 62 patients.
Research Results: patients diagnosed with DED were 59.68% with the majority occurring in female patients and patients with age groups ≥ 60 years. Through the chi square test, a significant relationship was found between gender and the incidence of Dry Eye Disease (p = 0.015), the female gender was at higher risk than the male. A significant relationship was also found in the relationship between age and the incidence of Dry Eye Disease (p = 0.012), the incidence of DED increased with age.
Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between female and old age with the incidence of dry eye disease in patients of UMM General Hospital.
