Abstract
This study is motivated by the importance of language politeness in classroom interactions, particularly in learning editorial texts that demand critical thinking and ethical communication. The study aims to describe the politeness principles and politeness strategies used by students in Indonesian language learning on editorial text material at SMA Nuris Jember. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through indirect observation of learning videos, accompanied by listening, note-taking, and documentation techniques. The data were analyzed by transcribing, classifying, and interpreting students’ utterances based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies and Leech’s politeness principles. The results show that students applied various politeness strategies, including positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald-on record, as well as politeness principles such as approbation, agreement, and tact maxims. These findings indicate that students are able to express opinions logically while maintaining politeness throughout the learning process. The study concludes that editorial text learning contributes to the development of students’ pragmatic competence and polite character in academic communication contexts.
