Abstract
Music plays a significant role as an artistic expression as well as a medium of social communication that reflects the concerns of society. Song lyrics are often used by musicians to articulate criticism of injustice, inequality, and policies that disadvantage certain groups. Silampukau, consistently presents social criticism in their works, including the song Bola Raya, which highlights the limitations of public spaces and social problems in urban life. Based on this context, this study aims to analyze the content of the lyrics in Bola Raya to identify the forms of social criticism contained within them. The research problem is formulated as: how is social criticism represented in the lyrics of Silampukau’s Bola Raya
Theoretically, this study employs the concept of social criticism, understood as an expression of dissatisfaction with social conditions perceived as unjust. The research applies a qualitative content analysis method, which allows for the systematic and objective interpretation of both explicit and implicit messages within the lyrics. The data, in the form of song lyrics, were categorized into nine types of social criticism, focusing on the relationship between the text and the social realities of marginalized urban communities.
The findings indicate that the lyrics of Bola Raya contain criticism of the limited access to public spaces for children, rigid legal bureaucracy, and the vulnerability of marginalized communities due to limited legal education. The song also illustrates how simple needs, such as playing, are constrained by regulations and structural interests that do not support marginalized groups. These findings affirm that music, particularly through lyrics, serves not only as a medium of aesthetic expression but also as an effective form of social criticism in voicing the concerns of society.
