Abstract
Mathematics is a subject that plays a vital role in developing logical, analytical, systematic, and critical thinking skills and therefore must be taught from the elementary level. However, many students still struggle to understand mathematics, particularly in solving word problems related to whole numbers. This issue is worsened by monotonous teaching methods such as lectures and the lack of engaging and interactive learning media. Based on observations and interviews conducted at SDN Pendem 01, Batu City, it was found that students were less active and had difficulty focusing during mathematics lessons, as teachers relied solely on textbooks and did not utilize any supporting media.
To address this problem, this study aims to develop interactive animation-based learning media using articulate storyline 3 to support students’ understanding of whole number word problems in fourth-grade elementary school. This research applies a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The developed media combines visual and audio elements to attract students’ interest and provide a more contextual and enjoyable learning experience. Expert validation indicates that the media is highly valid for use in learning, in terms of content, appearance, and interactivity.
Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, expert validation questionnaires, and student learning outcome tests. The validation results show that the developed media is highly valid, with a media validation score of 90% and a material validation score of 72.5%. The student response questionnaire scored 98.58%, indicating that the media is attractive and valid for use in the learning process. Therefore, the interactive animation media based on articulate storyline 3 can be considered effective in supporting students’ understanding of whole number material, as evidenced by the improvement in student learning outcomes. This media is thus valid for use as an alternative learning tool in mathematics, particularly in enhancing students’ comprehension of word problems in elementary schools.
