Abstract

(Background) The skin is the largest organ of the human body that functions as a protective barrier, yet it is vulnerable to damage caused by free radicals, leading to premature aging. Corn oil (Zea mays L.) contains vitamin E and unsaturated fatty acids that act as antioxidants, while ceramide serves to repair the skin barrier.
(Method) This experimental study formulated emulgels containing ceramide and corn oil with three concentrations of Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 (0.5%, 0.75%, and 1%) as the gelling agent. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH method with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 517 nm.
(Result) The results showed that corn oil demonstrated moderate antioxidant activity (IC50 = 105.85 ppm), while ceramide showed no antioxidant activity. The emulgel formulations produced inhibition values ranging from 29.65% to 34.33%, with a slight increase along with higher concentrations of the gelling agent, although the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05).
(Conclusion) Ceramide does not contribute to antioxidant activity, while corn oil serves as the main source of antioxidant effect in the emulgel. Variations in Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6 concentrations did not significantly affect the antioxidant activity.
