GAMBARAN SELF-ACCEPTANCE PADA PASIEN YANG TERDIAGNOSA DIABETES MELITUS

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence
globally, including in Indonesia. Patients with DM often face significant emotional and
physical challenges, such as lifestyle changes, health complications, and social stigma.
These conditions can affect patients' ability to accept their circumstances, known as
self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is essential to support quality of life and the process
of adapting to chronic illness. Objective: to describe the description of self-acceptance
in patients diagnosed with DM through a qualitative case study approach. Methods:
In this case study, data was collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation,
and source triangulation, focusing on the process of self-acceptance, family support,
and lifestyle changes of the patient. Results: This research produced 5 themes, namely
the stages of denial of the disease suffered, the stages of bargaining against changes
due to the disease, the stages of adapting to new roles due to DM, family support in
the process of self-acceptance, the stages of coping strategies and self-management of
DM.. Conclusion: This study confirms the importance of family support in the
process of self-acceptance of elderly people with chronic diseases. This finding is
expected to be a reference for health workers in designing interventions that
strengthen the role of families to improve the quality of life of patients.
