HAMBATAN KOMUNIKASI JARAK JAUH ANTARA ORANG TUA DENGAN ANAK YANG MENEMPUH PENDIDIKAN DI PERGURUAN TINGGI DI LUAR KOTA MELALUI APLIKASI WHATSAPP (Studi Kasus Pada Masyarakat di Desa Medasari Kecamatan Rawa Jitu Selatan)

This research discusses the obstacles faced by parents in Medasari Village, South Rawa Jitu District, in maintaining long-distance communication with their children who are pursuing higher education outside the city through the WhatsApp application. Communication within the family, particularly between parents and children, plays a vital role in maintaining emotional bonds when they do not live together. Although WhatsApp is often used due to its accessibility, some parents still experience difficulties in using it effectively.

This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from four parents in Medasari Village, South Rawa Jitu District, who have diverse ages and technological abilities.

The findings reveal three main categories of communication barriers: first, technical barriers, such as limited signal and difficulties in understanding how to use the application; second, semantic barriers, arising from the lack of context in messages or the use of unfamiliar terms; and third, behavioral barriers, such as differences in time, habits, and openness in communication.

In conclusion, the presence of the WhatsApp application alone is not sufficient to ensure smooth communication between parents and children. There needs to be an improvement in technological understanding as well as adaptation of communication styles from both sides so that the relationship remains well maintained despite being in different places.
