Abstract
Masculinity can be understood as a social construction of manhood. A man is not automatically born with masculine traits, but rather shaped through cultural influences. The John Wick film is analyzed to examine how the representation of masculinity is constructed within the framework of masculine values. Furthermore, the audience, as the recipients of the film, will consume and interpret its meaning based on their individual preferences. This process serves as the basis for assessing whether John Wick reinforces traditional masculinity or instead reflects a shift in values as interpreted by the audience. The purpose of this study is to explore how students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang perceive masculinity in the film John Wick. This research employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive research type. The theoretical framework used is reception analysis theory with Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding approach. Data collection techniques were conducted through interviews and documentation. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the audience’s position in receiving messages of masculinity through the film John Wick varies. Of the six subjects studied, three occupied the hegemonic-dominant position, two were in the negotiation position, and one adopted the oppositional position. Thus, audience responses to the representation of masculinity in John Wick are not uniform. This diversity is influenced by both internal and external factors. Internal factors consist of the inherent values of each subject, which then interact with external factors such as gender, age, media, social experiences, and cultural background.
