Abstract

Social media has become a vital arena for activism, particularly in ecological political issues. The controversy over nickel mining in Raja Ampat has sparked public debate regarding the threat of ecosystem destruction. This study analyzes netizens’ responses to a TikTok video by @sadampermanawiyana through the frameworks of Digital Public Sphere (Papacharissi), Media Interactivity (Rafaeli & McMillan), Digital Activism and Connective Action (Bennett & Segerberg), and Political Ecology (Robbins & Sultana) to explain power relations among the state, corporations, and local communities.

This research adopts a qualitative descriptive method, collecting data through scraping and documentation. A total of 181 comments were analyzed thematically to identify response patterns.

The findings reveal that netizens criticize the government for siding with corporations and neglecting environmental preservation, while condemning companies for destructive mining practices in conservation areas. The comments convey sadness, anger, and prayers concerning the potential destruction of Raja Ampat, alongside expressions of solidarity through moral support, calls to protect nature, and symbolic digital actions representing collective ecological awareness in the online sphere.
