Peran Strategis Produser Dalam Tahapan Produksi Film “ABSENCE”

Film is one of the mass communication media that not only provide entertainment but also represent social reality. One of the most widely discussed social issues is the phenomenon of fatherlessness, or the absence of a father figure in the family, which affects communication patterns, psychological development, and children’s relationship within their social environment. This undergraduate thesis aims to describe the production process of a short film entitled Absence and to elaborate on the role of the producer in each stage of production, from pre-production, production, to post-production. This research employs a qualitative method with a film production study approach. Data were collected through observations, surveys conducted with several families, as well as the author’s involvement throughout the entire production process. The findings indicate that the producer plays a crucial role not only as a technical and production management coordinator but also as a communication bridge among the crew and as guardian of the director’s vision to ensure consistency in the final outcome of the film. In pre-production, the producer is involved in preparing proposals, fundraising, and crew coordination. During the production stage, the producer ensures the smooth execution of filming by managing schedules, technical requirements, and maintaining the talent’s mood. Meanwhile, in post-production, the producer contributes to organizing the editing timeline, film distribution, and production administration management. Absence represents the issue of fatherlessness through narrative and cinematic visualization, portraying the impact of an absent father on family communication dynamics. Thus, this study emphasizes that a producer does not merely function as production organizer but also holds a strategic communication role that determines the quality of the film and the message conveyed to the audience.
