This study aims to determine the implementation and effectiveness of the shadowing technique in improving the Arabic speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Malang.
The research employs a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pretest–posttest type. Data were collected through oral tests and questionnaires, while data analysis techniques included the normality test, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and N-Gain effectiveness test.
The results indicate a significant improvement in students’ speaking abilities after the application of the shadowing technique. The average score increased from 50.8 to 75.8, with Z = -4.472 and p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). The aspect showing the highest improvement was vocabulary (81%), followed by pronunciation (78.7%), fluency (77.5%), and grammar (65%). The average N-Gain score of 0.51 was categorized as moderate. In addition, the questionnaire results revealed that the majority of students responded positively to the use of the shadowing technique in learning Arabic speaking skills.
