Abstract
This study aims to analyze the framing of clickbait headlines in sport news, particularly regarding the controversy surrounding the Indonesia vs. Bahrain match, as presented by two online news outlets: TvOnenews.com and VIVA.co.id. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Robert N. Entman’s framing analysis model, which consists of four framing devices: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgment, and treatment recommendation. The purpose is to understand how both media outlets present and construct news coverage of the issue. In addition, the study applies the political economy of media theory to examine the relationship between clickbait headline strategies and the economic interests of the media industry.
The findings reveal that both media utilize clickbait headlines with different stylistic approaches to attract readers’ attention. TvOnenews.com tends to frame its headlines around the possibility of a rematch, drawing on similar cases previously handled by FIFA, whereas VIVA.co.id adopts a more provocative format, using questions and emphasizing referee-related controversies. Both media frame the Indonesian national team as the disadvantaged party, yet they differ in contextual presentation and resolution recommendations. The clickbait strategy aligns with the economic logic of the media, which prioritizes maximizing clicks and audience engagement, even at the expense of information accuracy. This study highlights how commercial interests shape the way online media construct public perception of sports news.
