Abstract

The phenomenon of forest and land fires in Indonesia is an environmental issue that occurs repeatedly every year. The nature and pattern of forest and land fires that occur in Indonesia are very complex, starting from the factors and impacts they cause. The government has made various efforts but has not been able to stem the rate of forest and land fires in Indonesia. Therefore, Greenpeace Indonesia is present to encourage and as an alternative to the government's efforts. This study aims to explain Greenpeace's efforts to encourage the government in handling forest and land fires in Indonesia in 2015-2023. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method by utilizing secondary data from reports, official documents, Greenpeace publications, and other relevant sources. The analysis was carried out using the concept of the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in global environmental governance by Barbara Gemmill and Abimbola Bamidele-Izu. The results of the study show that Greenpeace Indonesia plays a role in five main aspects, namely as Information-Based Duties through research and provision of public information; Inputs into Policy Development by providing policy input; Operational Functions through direct involvement in the field with the community; Assessment and Monitoring by conducting assessments and monitoring of environmental conditions and regulatory compliance; and Advocacy for Environmental Justice through campaigns and legal support for affected communities, with the most dominant and consistent effort carried out by Greenpeace Indonesia being Information-Based Duties.
