The Impact of Online Gaming on Social Interaction Among Teenagers (A Study of Teenagers at Karang Taruna Bumi Palapa Malang)
Keywords: Social Interaction, Adolescents, Online Games
In modern times like today, adolescents who used to be busy playing traditional games are now starting to shift because of the rapid development of technology. The sophistication and convenience of technological developments have changed the lifestyle and play world of adolescents; they are more interested in utilizing technology as a means of play, such as online games. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of playing online games on the social interaction of adolescents at Karang Taruna Bumi Palapa Malang. Social interaction skills are examined based on the basic concepts of social interaction requirements. This study uses a qualitative approach with primary and secondary data sources. Primary data was obtained from interviews with research subjects, and secondary data served as supporting data for the primary data, obtained from documentation and observation. This study found that teenagers in Karang Taruna Bumi Palapa Malang interact more often virtually through online games than face to face. Eye contact is considered important only when talking to older people, while physical contact such as handshakes is common in the Karang Taruna environment. Communication is more open on the topic of online games, with difficulty giving feedback outside of
that topic. Empathy skills emerge more easily during direct interaction than virtual interaction.
