Abstract

The Satu Suro tradition is a Javanese New Year celebration routinely observed by the Kejawen community in Wonosari Village. The tradition includes several rituals such as istighosah (communal prayer), wayang performances, ritual processions with offerings, and the burning of sangkala. These activities serve both as an expression of gratitude for God’s blessings and as an effort to seek divine favor for the year ahead. This study seeks to provide an in-depth understanding of the ritual communication process within the Satu Suro tradition practiced by the Kejawen community in Wonosari Village. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design grounded in ethnography, data were collected through interviews and documentation. Five research participants were selected using the snowball sampling technique. The collected data were analyzed using Spradley’s analytical framework, with validity ensured through data source triangulation.
The findings reveal that ritual communication in the Satu Suro tradition functions as a means of invoking safety, protection, and blessings from God for the entire community as they enter the New Year. Furthermore, the communication manifested in this tradition encompasses both verbal and non-verbal forms, reflected in three dimensions: communication between humans and God, humans and nature, and humans and fellow humans.
