Abstract
Directing a single-character, single-location film presents unique challenges due to the limited number of actors and confined space, which can potentially affect the visual strength and narrative flow. These limitations raise the question of how directing strategies can still create an engaging and emotionally resonant viewing experience. In this context, the focus is on how a director can optimize the actor’s expression, utilize the limited space effectively, and develop a strong narrative to maintain audience engagement throughout the film.
The production design was carried out using the single-character confinement narrative approach, in which the entire story revolves around one character in a single location. The planning process involved studying directing theories, analyzing several reference films, and formulating visual and dramatic strategies. Three main aspects of this design include intensive actor direction to explore the character's emotions, the arrangement of blocking and visual composition to keep the confined space cinematic, and the development of narrative structure to maintain tension and dynamics despite only featuring one character.
The final result demonstrates that this approach enables a deep and intimate psychological exploration of the character. Through focused direction and maximum utilization of visual and dramatic elements, the film ABSENCE successfully delivers a compelling cinematic experience. The project’s implementation achieved measurable success at the international level, becoming a finalist at the Sweden Film Awards and being officially selected for the First Time Filmmaker Sessions Volunteer Volume 4, part of the Lift-Off Global Network.
