Abstract
Background: Nursing rounds are a collaborative strategy in nursing practice aimed at improving the quality of nursing care through interprofessional discussions. However, their implementation in some hospitals has not been optimal because they are often conducted conditionally, not routinely scheduled, and not supported by clear policies.
Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with four nurses working in the ward, including the head nurse, the primary nurse, and two associate nurses.
Results: The implementation of nursing rounds has not been optimal because these activities are still carried out conditionally, namely only when the physician in charge of care (DPJP) is present, with very limited involvement of other professionals. Furthermore, evaluation results indicate that the indicators in the standard operating procedure (SOP) have not been fully met. The lack of coordination and communication between professionals is a major obstacle to the effective and sustainable implementation of nursing rounds.
Discussion: This study shows that the implementation of nursing rounds in the ward is not optimal because it is still conditional and involves minimal multidisciplinary team involvement. However, nursing rounds are crucial for improving the quality of care and interprofessional coordination. Simulations through role-playing demonstrate that with a structured approach, round implementation can be improved. Therefore, regular scheduling, socialization of SOPs, and team commitment are necessary for effective and sustainable nursing rounds.
