Abstract

In 2022, 0.97% of Indonesia’s population of 275.77 million equivalent to approximately 2.7 million individuals were categorized as single fathers. The death of a mother may result in the father assuming the sole responsibility for childcare and family provision. Film, as an audio-visual medium, possesses the capacity to convey social messages and realities to its audience. One example is Miracle in Cell No. 7, a film that portrays the relationship between a father with disabilities and his daughter, thereby illustrating the role of a single parent.
The objective of this study is to examine the representation of father involvement through the application of Mise en Scène techniques in Hanung Brahmantyo’s Miracle in Cell No. 7. This research adopts David Bordwell’s theory of Mise en Scène as its primary analytical framework, supported by Lamb’s theory of Father Involvement. The findings indicate that the Mise en Scène elements in the film are effectively utilized to construct the depiction of father involvement.
Through the incorporation of setting, costume and makeup, lighting, movement, and performance, the film demonstrates that the father’s involvement in parenting is not confined to physical or mental capacities, but also encompasses affection, presence, and responsibility. The relationship between Dodo and Kartika, which is portrayed with emotional depth and warmth, constitutes the central message of the film. Consequently, the film may be regarded as not only emotionally moving but also meaningful in its representation of fatherhood.
