PILIHAN RASIOANAL MAHASISWA DALAM PRAKTIK SEKS BEBAS DI UNIVERSITAS "X", KOTA MALANG

This study explores the phenomenon of premarital sexual behavior among university students using James S. Coleman's Rational Choice Theory. Conducted at “X” University in Malang, the research adopts a qualitative case study approach. Participants were selected through snowball sampling, targeting active students aged 19–24 who had engaged in free sex. The findings reveal that such behavior is not merely driven by biological impulses, but also by emotional needs, social influences, and practical benefits such as intimacy, cost efficiency, and the fulfillment of romantic relationships. Despite recognizing the risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unwanted pregnancies, and social stigma students make deliberate choices based on perceived benefits. Contributing factors such as weakened social norms, reduced family control, and the availability of supporting resources (private housing, economic means, and peer networks) reinforce these decisions. The study concludes that student involvement in free sex can be understood as a rational action shaped by shifting societal structures and individual considerations.
