Abstract
This study aims to examine how family moral values in the mother-child relationship are portrayed through the short film Bao. This 2018 animated film by Pixar Animation Studios tells the story of an emotional bond between a mother and her child, wrapped in Chinese cultural elements, and presented entirely without verbal dialogue. The narrative is conveyed solely through gestures, expressions, and symbolic visuals, making it an intriguing subject for analysis from the perspectives of visual communication and family morality.
The study uses a qualitative content analysis method within the paradigm of social constructivism. Data were obtained through visual observation of all scenes in the film Bao, and analyzed using units of analysis such as non-verbal actions, including facial expressions, body gestures, and visual symbols within the film.
The results of the study reveal seven categories of family moral values depicted in the film: maternal affection, family conflict, efforts at reconciliation, the child's search for identity, parental possessiveness, extreme possessiveness, and family reconciliation. The film successfully portrays the dynamics of the mother-child relationship through moral messages about the importance of love, openness, and acceptance within the family.
The main message of Bao emphasizes that family relationships should be built on understanding, not merely biological ties. This research is expected to contribute to the study of visual communication, family morality in film media, and serve as a reference for filmmakers in delivering moral messages through non-verbal visual mediums.
