Abstract
Background: Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) occurs due to a disturbance in
the conduction system above the His bundle which causes the heart rate to increase
spontaneously to more than 100x/minute and is characterized by symptoms such as
syncope, chest pain, dyspnea, weakness, or palpitations. One way to overcome this
is by modifying the Valsalva maneuver. The aim of this study was to analyze the
application of the modified Valsalva maneuver technique in SVT patients with
nursing problems of decreased cardiac output.
Case study: Patient Mrs. I, 32 years old, compos mentis, complained of chest
palpitations, tightness, chest pain, and enlarged abdomen since 1 week ago. ECG
results showed SVT arrhythmia with a pulse pressure of 186x/minute.
Intervention: The intervention given is a modified Valsalva maneuver technique
in which the patient is sitting on the bed then blows into a 10cc syringe for 15
seconds, then the patient is quickly laid down with the legs elevated at 45° for 15
seconds, then the patient is returned to the starting position. This intervention aims
to return the heart rhythm to sinus rhythm and reduce pulse pressure.
Result: After implementing the modified Valsalva maneuver, the patient's
arrhythmia reduced from SVT to sinus rhythm, the patient's pulse pressure
decreased, and palpitations and shortness of breath decreased.
