Abstract

This study aims to explore the perspectives of students at SMK Negeri 2 Malang City regarding religious tolerance. The research was motivated by growing concerns over the rise of intolerant attitudes among students, which have, in some cases, escalated to acts of violence. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, the study gathered data through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation.
The findings reveal that students at SMK Negeri 2 Malang City generally hold a moderate understanding of religious tolerance. They grasp the concept in accordance with Islamic teachings—respecting the beliefs of others without blending religious doctrines. Students are able to differentiate between tolerance and syncretism and interact harmoniously with peers and teachers of different religious backgrounds. However, the study also notes several concerns related to certain teachers, particularly regarding the use of specific religious symbols and jokes that touch on sensitive religious matters, which could potentially lead to misunderstandings.
