Abstract

Liquid waste, if not managed properly, can potentially pollute the environment. Using a prototype Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), this study aims to identify the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and detergent residues in hotel wastewater in Malang City and analyze the potential of the research results as learning resources for biology in grade 10 of high school. The study was conducted using a descriptive quantitative approach with purposive sampling and laboratory testing of polluted parameters. The measurement results show that BOD, COD, and TSS exceed the threshold for domestic liquid waste quality standards stipulated in the Ministry of Environment regulations, but detergent residues remain below the threshold. These results indicate a significant level of organic pollution and the importance of efficient wastewater treatment. Based on the curriculum analysis, the results of this study are relevant for use as learning resources in environmental pollution material for grade 10 of high school. Students are expected to be able to understand the concept of water pollution and scientific procedures for measuring water quality through a local context-based approach.
