Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of multicultural education in fostering national identity awareness among students of the Civic Education (PPKn) Study Program, class of 2021, at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The background of this research is based on the importance of multicultural education in shaping attitudes of tolerance, respect for diversity, and a spirit of unity in Indonesia's pluralistic society.
This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation to explore students’ understanding, implementation, and the impact of multicultural education on their awareness of national identity.
The findings reveal that students generally have a good theoretical understanding of multicultural education, though there are still challenges in internalizing values and applying them in daily life. Multicultural education is implemented through participatory learning methods such as cross-cultural discussions, case studies, and field practice activities. Multicultural education has proven to play a significant role in strengthening students' national identity awareness by promoting national values, appreciation of diversity, and the integration of local and national identities.
