Abstract

This study discusses the complexity of environmental degradation to changes in the lifestyle in the country of Nauru, this change occurs because Nauru does not think about the long-term impacts that will be faced in the future. In the end, this has an impact on the lifestyle of the people of Nauru in economic, socio-cultural and health aspects. This study aims to find out the history and beginning of phosphate exploitation in Nauru, find out the impact of phosphate exploitation on environmental and socio-economic conditions of the community, and find out how environmental conditions change due to phosphate exploitation. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through literature studies. This research uses the framework of political ecology, lifestyle changes, postcolonial approaches, and also social determinants of health. The results of this study show that the environmental degradation that occurs in Nauru triggers complex impacts, namely economic decline, social changes that make its communities dependent on aid and changes in consumption patterns that trigger health crises.
